“I will take what I learn from my teachers at Dance Workshop with me for the rest of my life. Dancing has directly and indirectly molded my personality. It has taught me that doing something that I love can help make a difference in someone else's life. That is a great feeling!”

Dancing With My Daughter

Today in Zumba class, I was learning new choreography as we danced to the Latin beat of the music. It was great! I was sweating, stretching, heart racing, and trying to get my feet and arms to do what they should be doing! I am not a dancer! Have never attended a dance class in my life, but here I was dancing. And better yet, I was dancing with my 26 year old daughter. As I looked at the two of us in the mirrors on the wall, I couldn’t help but smile. I realized I was sharing something special with her and it was priceless.

When I enrolled my daughter in dance classes when she was 3 years old, I did it for a lot of reasons. The other 2 girls in the neighborhood were enrolling at Dance Workshop by Shari and I thought it would be fun for Monica also. She had shown some early talent – the video showing her at 18 months swaying to the music proves it! I enrolled her to give her the dance class experience and because all little girls want to learn to be the beautiful ballerina in a tutu.

What I didn’t realize at the time was all of the other reasons that she should attend dance class. She learned so many valuable lessons – poise, confidence, appreciation of the arts, discipline, and perseverance. She learned that hard work always pays off – maybe not with a first place trophy at every competition, but in knowing that trying your best leads to self-satisfaction.

And I learned a lot from her 15 years in dance class! I came to appreciate the hard work and dedication of the “Lovers of Dance” – performers, teachers, and choreographers. It is a beautiful art and often people can lose sight of the years that it takes to perfect what is seen on stage. Going to a performance at the Benedum, or even at the local high school musical has made me experience these performances with new respect.

I learned that while natural talent is great, anyone can learn to dance with the right teachers, motivation and encouragement. There are children who love to dance, but who don’t have the stereotypical dancer’s body. Maybe they don’t have the best turn-out, or they struggle with pirouettes, but they want to dance. They should be allowed to become the best dancer that they can become.

As I danced with my daughter in Zumba class, I realized that I gave Monica the ultimate gift when she was 3 years old. She still loves to dance, appreciates the arts, and is inspired to work hard in her career.

So, at age 50-something, I decided I wanted to dance. And, although I will never perform on stage, I am having fun, and staying fit. That is the gift I am giving myself.
